The palms in the canyons are the California Fan Palms, W. filifera. They are somewhat difficult to produce in nurseries but the W. robusta (Mexican Fan Palms) are easy and very fast. Therefore, in an act of economic sustainability, most nurseries grow the W. robusta, not filifera. Furthermore, most purchasers (present company excepted) don't know the difference. You will see some W. filifera planted in Palm Springs, but the canyons are the only place they are native (and, presumably, 100% filifera, not a hybrid).
