One of the most knowledgeable nurseryman I know uses a cocktail of a very close dinitroaniline relative of trifluralin in weed control in palms; occasionally I use another closely related dinitroaniline. Probably a safer alternative would be ordinary Roundup, which another very experienced nurseryman uses directly on weeds in mondo grass. There are so many forms of mondo grass it's best to test an obscure location first. The Roundup would have less residue than any of the dinitroanilines.
Another factor is that you're more likely to have Roundup on hand than than trifluralin.
