I've planted a large mass of liriope spicata, hundreds of small bare root plants along the periphery of my yard where I have several large sabal palmettos (the largest are around 15 feet tall. They were transplanted last year and are fairly well established). Some of the spicata is within a few feet of the Sabals. My question is, I would like to use Preen (Trifluralin), a pre-emergent herbicide, in this area where the liriope has been planted to hold down the amount of weeding I'll need to do until they are established, which will be a couple of years. Preen is labeled to be safe around Washingtonia, but Sabal sp. aren't mentioned. In Broschat's Ornamental Palm Horticulture, he has Trifluralin listed as "safe on Palms". Does anyone have experience with this product in proximity to Sabal Palmetto? I'm not taking any chances otherwise.
