Larry I'm having good luck with a washingtonia/x. It's next to the house with a southern exposure, the foundation drain system on the house keep the roots from getting to wet in winter. The older fans turn brown in the winter but it comes back strong in the spring.I spray the spear with copper in early spring as a precaution. And I think wrapping the palm crown with C9 xmas lights helps also.
