It is strange that Sabal minor and Sabal palmetto seem to tolerate just about any soil while Serenoa grows only in sandy conditions. I've not tried to grow Serenoa, mainly because I have a lot of shaded area, and other palms such as Trachycarpus thrive here in shady clay-soil conditions. Further west in Louisiana, those gumbo clays probably have poor oxygen content.
