There was an article in Southeastern Palms, the quarterly publication of the society, several years ago which said Serenoa repens was mainly a Florida and Georgia coastal plain species. If I can find the article I will be more specific. However, this species will definitely grow in your area. It prefers sandy soil--not clay.
