Zoo Atlanta has done an excellent job, in my opinion, of creating a tropical feeling through use of plantings. Nothing particularly exotic, but there are Trachies galore and a smattering of palmettos and a needle or two. But, they've used Tetrapanex, Firmiana Simplex, Bamboo, Fatsia all over the place to create an incredible jungle feel. There's one stand of Bamboo that I'm dying to ID in terms of species. It's PROBABLY not Moso, but the stems looks almost as thick as Moso (they're about 5-7 inches in diameter). The Grant Park neighborhood around the Zoo has lots of earthy, hip intown bungalows and many of them have windmills, pindos and eucalyptus. There's a very interesting, small nursery called The Urban Gardener on Boulevard just north of I-20, a location that's only about 5 minutes from the Zoo. The urban gardener has a few palms but is mainly good for offbeat perennials, shrubs and small trees.
