Posted by Alex -- Atlanta z8a on August 15, 2007, 8:42 pm P.S. My other semi-failures include two large Butia Capitatas that I resuced from a John Deere Nursery 3 years ago. They were in flower when I found them lying on their sides in a baking parking lot, having been there for two years with no care. Well, I planted them and have given them plenty of water and nourishment but alas no flowers, no fruit and no signs of real robust growth. What's the deal? A small Butia planted from a one gallon container is growing like gangbusters.

I have had a lot of successes to be proud of. I've kept three Gunneras alive all summer here in Atlanta including through our 100 degree temps the past three weeks. But, there is one success that continues to elude me. Tetrapanex. You will probably laugh, since it's so easy for most people. I ordered two Tetrapanex "Steroidal Giant" from Plant Delights last spring. Both fizzled away and died despite perfect care from me. It was the first time that I've ever asked for a free replacement from a nursery. So, Plant Delights sent me two more beautiful robust looking Steroidal Giants about a month ago. I planted them. Pffffffttt. They seemed to die immediately. What is the deal? Why is this Souther heirloom so easy for everybody else but not for me?
