I will agree that the variegated are more tender to cold, as least the foliage. They probably have similar root hardiness.

Jim, my variegated (I have two clumps) get a fair amount of sun. The only shade is what they get from the palmetto overhead, and in the afternoon when the sun moves to the other side of the house. I think the key, with so many things, is water.
