Tom, I really like these Alpinias! I know from experience they are not as hardy as the green form. The blooms are incredible - similar in respect to orchids. To get blooms, the plant must not die back during the winter. My dad has the green form in Glennville, GA and it has bloomed twice in probably 15 years with no protection. I have a variegated form in mostly shade that hasn't shown much growth this year. Maybe it is adjusting to being transplanted last fall. Jim
