Someone at the SPS meeting in Raleigh Saturday asked me if I had any luck overwintering Alpinia gingers. They do very well here in St. Marys. The green Alpinia zerumbet grows to about seven or eight feet tall, where as the variegated seems to top out at a foot or two smaller. It takes just a year of growth for the green to bloom, but here (so far) I needed more than two years for the variegated shell ginger, and then they all seemed to burst into bloom at one time in late May. It was a beautiful show while it lasted, and of course the plant is worth growing just for its foliage.
