Thank you Marisha for you help.
I guess I'm just a little bit impatient because its been several months already since I planted it in the ground and I want it to establish before cold weather gets here.
In answer to your question, I purchased the palm with a large root ball wrapped with burlap.
I have planted other Washingtonia's in my yard in past years and they are doing fine, but they were much smaller than this one when set out and were either potted or bare root when planted.
I have a small greenhouse where I am currently growing some from seed as well as a few other specimen palms.
I've just never planted one before of this size.
I'll stop watering the bud as you suggested.
I didn't feel comfortable with that approach anyway, just drawing straws until I could find out for sure.
