Posted by Jeff S, Apison TN on July 14, 2007, 9:06 am SPS Summer Meeting to Be Hosted by Tony Avent and Plant Delights The Southeastern Palm Society returns to Plant Delights in Raleigh, North Carolina, for its summer meeting, which will begin at 10:00 am on August 4, 2007. It’s hard to believe seven years have passed since we last met there, and another meeting in the Raleigh area is certainly overdue. Since its founding in 1988, Plant Delights has grown into one of the world’s premier mail-order nurseries. Headed by the multi-talented Tony Avent, the nursery supports Juniper Level Botanical Garden, the nursery’s unforgettable onsite display garden. Jeff Stevens, our Southeastern Palms editor, visited Plant Delights in June and found that since our last meeting there in 2000, the display garden has doubled in size and now features 17,000 unique plant species. Many palms and desert plants have been added, and the garden is a great place to observe diverse plant species that are comfortable in the climate and conditions of the southeastern United States. As a courtesy to Southeastern Palm Society members, the nursery will be open for shopping, so don’t forget to check out the online plant catalog, which includes a number of hard-to-find palms. At the website you’ll also find detailed directions, a list of nearby hotels and garden visitation guidelines. Following the Plant Delights visit, maps will be provided for a self-guided tour of the palms at Raleigh’s Pullen Park, Jaycee Park and the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. The tour will feature beautiful specimens of Sabal sp. ‘Birmingham’, Trachycarpus fortunei and other palms. The day promises to be one of non-stop fascination for lovers of hardy palms and rare and unusual plants. Members and non-members alike are welcome, so invite a gardening friend!
