I would guess if you give them some time you will probably have similar results as long as the tree is continuing to push the brown spear on out.

I'm certainly no expert, but I had a similar situation with a couple of potted windmills that put out brown/dead looking spears starting about a month ago. It was obviously cold damage as I had left them outside all winter. Your tree looks exactly how mine looked.
