Posted by Sam, SE Tenn on May 2, 2007, 8:55 pm, in reply to "Sam, good to hear from another SE TN "palm nut"" I am in Knoxville actually Randy, but I am going to be planting them at my mother's in Athens area because I live in an apt. Yes, know all about Cleveland. I got my degree in Chemistry at Cleveland State before going on to get an Environmental Studies degree at UTK. Sounds like you got a pretty good thing going there in raising your palms! That's similar to what mine is. I suspected that they might overwinter well inside near a window since they don't mind dry conditions. I have been very curious about these palms since they grow so fast. I plan on leaving them in my pot for about 2 years. It was the largest pot I could find at Wal-Mart and is way bigger than what is WAS in. So I expect at least a couple of years growth in that. Then maybe say Spring 2009, I might could get this sucker in the ground and let it grow during the year until winter 2009 and then when it defoliates for the most part, cut it back, wrap it up really good with burlap or something porous, spray the crown with copper fungicide and then keep plastic over the top of it loosely and also at the base. Then mulch heavily. Here's the thing: Let's say this works for a few years, then the palm starts getting too tall. I mean I'm only so tall on a ladder. Do you just keep cutting it back after it gets so high? The garbage can thing can only work for a while, but until then that's a good idea. Here's another thing: Ok, don't laugh alright? lol...but what about putting cat litter at the base? I think that is Calcium Sulfate and that's very water absorbing. That would help keep it a little dry if it was mulched with that then maybe pine straw (pine straw might be better since it doesn't mat down as bad as regular mulch). Good idea? Bad idea? We are all kinda in this together the way I see it to keep our palms surviving! I'd love to exchange ideas. Thanks for responding!

Yep, definitely a palm nut here. Got the fever last year when I learned about what some folks such as yourself were doing. I have been amazed!
