I have two Washys outside right now. They just spent their first winter outdoors and they are pushing out new fronds like crazy. I know several people in our area that have them growing outdoors. All I can tell you is what I have done and will continue to do. I purchased these two in the summer of '05. They spent all summer out in pots, and in the fall, I placed them into my unheated garage over the winter. I know the winter of '05-'06 was very mild, but I did not lose a single frond. In the spring of last year, I planted them outside and watered the "snot" out of them. I know you said they are "desert palms", but from my understanding, they will do alot better the more water you give them. Just make sure the soil is well draining. Last fall, after the frost got the fronds, I wrapped christmas lights around the trunks/growth sprear, and then wrapped them in an old blanket. I then placed a garbage can upside down over them and placed a block on top to keep the can from getting blown over. On the few nights the temps dropped below 25F, I turned on the christmas lights to give them just a little more heat. I removed everything in the end of February and they started to push out new growth. This last Easter cold spell, I covered them with blankets, but they still had their new fronds (3) burnt. They are now really starting to take off. Hope this helps...
BTW, where in SE TN are you located? I am in Cleveland, TN... Heard of it?
