Can anyone help me with some advice on growing a Mexican Fan Palm? I am going to be growing it around the Southeast TN area. That's zone 7a. I bought it and it has about 2 feet of trunk right now. I planted it in the largest pot I could find and am going to try to grow it that way for a year or perhaps even two years. It was just bought about a month or so ago. I plan on fertilizing it with some slow release fertilizer and a very low dose of Epsom salt. After October gets here I am going to bring it in and sit it in a large window area and hope it stays ok. With it being a desert palm, the low humidity indoors should be ok. Then sit it outside for another growing season and by year 2 it should be quite big and be able to survive better outside, then after having another spring and summer to acclimate outdoors what do I do then? Let the fronds die back and then cut them off or do I cut them right away before the first hard freeze? Then mulch (what kind of mulching? pine straw?)before that freeze and wrap it loosely in burlap with the head well protected and then hopefully can cut it until I find green wood every year? Will that damage accumulate and kill the palm eventually? Someone give me some ideas and help. I really do appreciate it!
