
Posted by alice on 8/5/2005, 12:32 pm, in reply to "Autistic Behavior" Would it work if you had her do something (don't even associate it with the hiding behavior yet) with that arm, such as rub or pat it with her other hand, or put a wrist watch on it that she could look at or hide with her hand, or... let's see... even a puppet on her hand, or a pretend tattoo or sticker on her arm, or a strip of velcro to pull off. It should be something that you can give a verbal cue to (such as "give your arm a pat") and play a game where she practices doing it -- then stopping doing it -- then doing it again. Then once she had it mastered, you could give her that verbal cue when she started to hide her face and really praise her for doing the new behavior. Another idea might be to alter the hiding behavior itself, to where she just put one finger on her face instead of the whole arm. I think it will take trial and error, but the behavioral technique of using small steps and practicing them to replace the undesired behavior should work eventually.
