She verbalizes how she's feeling as she's doing it, so words wouldn't help I don't think.) I'm just out of school and have had very little experience with autistic children. I see this girl two hours a day, five days a week for summer school and we're having a wonderful time... this is the one thing I haven't tried "teaching" her though because I'm stuck... if anyone has advice, I'd really appreciate it. I can't seem to find anything in my books or online! Thank you so much in advance...

Hi everyone- I am a new clinician working with a 14 year old girl w/autism who is always "hiding" her face with her arm because she's "nervous" (her word.) She displays this behavior with familiar caregivers and teachers in familiar situations and behavior modification techniques are not working. I would like to help her and was wondering if anyone had suggestions. I was thinking three things:
Teaching her anti-anxiety techniques/strategies... maybe yoga or something.
Create a point/reward system for keeping her arm away from her face, although I really think it makes her feel more comfortable to hide... I think this behavior needs to be replaced with something else.
