When in doubt, think in terms of adding visuals. Good items to try are Interactive Stories (like gingerbread man) and Adapted Songboards, both from Mayer Johnson; and story aprons with figures from Lakeshore Learning . I can also email you more info. in detail from a recent presentation I did on low tech. circle time if you want me to.
