First, I would tackle it the same way you would tackle it for a verbal student with a low MLU, you gradually want to incease the MLU. Chunking by icon (noun & verb together for instance)as an intermediate step seems almost unnatural but may work, haven't tried it myself. What I do is color coding with spatial arrangements. FOr example, articles go first on the left and are yellow, nouns come next and are blue, then verbs which are green and so on. I would start simple, with pairing up 2 items. Having articles with nouns is more natural than nouns with verbs, they can be left out and the message is still understood. I try to do it in the order in which we read sentences so it will spill over into reading and writing grammar skills. I also use this format to teach expressive grammar. I might do one page to work on verb agreement, keeping a core set of nouns on one line and then verb options. I have done it as simply as he, she, they in one color on the far left, is and are in another color in the next column, and then the verb options (which are stable at this point) in green on the right. You probably want to pick a color for a part of speech early on and keep it consistent throughout (which I need to fix on a device actually).
