At that age, I wouldn't look for a very long attention span. Find what he is interested in and think of all the ways you can jointly play with that toy or activity. (examples: blocks, bubbles, trucks, toy animals, dress-up,peek-a-boo and finger plays). Use lots of short phrases (1-3) words to name and describe actions, be repetitive, enthusiastic, and silly, encourage turn-taking and vocal play (making speech sounds to accompany the action) and imitation of facial expression, hand movements, etc. Be ready to change activities often, and be ready to change the "speed" -- quiet activities like reading together, active activities with lots of fine and gross motor movement. Have fun! Kids learn best through play with a fun-loving partner.
