Hello, I am working with a 3 1/2 year old boy with autism who is non-verbal. We are in phase II of pecs and he's doing great, traveling to his book and taking the picture to his communication partner independently, etc. We are still only using one pic at a time. I have identified 5 things that are most motivating for him and I provide those pics each session. My only problem is that, there is one toy he loves SO much that he will only want to choose that toy the entire time. If after several trials I put the toy (which is the fisher price air ball popper) away, he will melt down and go look for it, even if I have another highly preferred item available. I feel bad taking away something he obviously wants and is willing to communicate for, but I know that he is supposed to be working on exchanging for lots of different things at this point. What should I do? Should I not even have the ball popper as a choice?
