I need some help with a second grade student with Autism. He is nonverbal, does some babbling. He is the happiest kid in the world, but has no mode of communication. He is able to do phase I pecs but only with edibles, he will not do phase one independently for anything else. He is also diabetic so using food all the time is an issue. We do use it with ice chips which works well. We have tried working with signing, but he does not independently sign anything. We are working on him signing "more" for a preferred activity. He seems very happy to go along with his day and not request anything. My next idea is to create situations where he will get frustrated enough to communicate. I have thought about using a simple voice output system with basic messages to see if that peaks an interest. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
