She sounds exactly like my student. My student doesn't seem to understand the pictures, so I took some actual objects (spoon, cup) and some miniature objects (shopping cart because she helps push the cart for laundry) and mounted them on 5x7 pieces of plexiglass, as she can be very strong and destructive. I have asked the staff to show them to her when she does or transitions to those activities. It is very hard to assess what she is understanding and I don't really know how often staff actually follows through on using them. Anyway, it is just a thought in case your student is not understanding the picture symbols yet.
