My advice would be to continue to try to get the parents on board. You can discuss the research that working with AAC will not prevent speech in any way, and actually may lead to speech. If the parents push for it, you may feel it is appropriate to add goals for oral motor or imitating/producing consonants and vowels or word approximations. You could put these exercises or sounds/words on a go talk 9 board to let the student choose or request, that way she is doing both at the same time.
