I recently picked up a 9 year old client, a little girl with pretty involved cerebral palsy. In the past they have used a Go Talk with her, however now her parents feel that she is "ready to talk". Both her previous SLP and an SLP her family took her to for an independent consultation advised them that AAC was the way to go, as she would have great difficulty getting her message across due to the affect the CP has had on her speech. So now I am kind of in "limbo" so to speak about what I can do with her; she has the Go Talk, but because her parents feel she is "ready to talk", and want me to work on helping her become more verbal, I have no idea what to do with her. I am a new CF who hasn't worked much with CP or AAC, so I am needing some advice on what to do with this situation. Any activities I could do with her in the mean time would be helpful as well, since I do still have to see her for therapy. FYI she has no use of her left arm/hand and limited ROM for her right; just enough to push a button on her Go Talk, push herself along in her wheelchair, throw a small ball a short distance, etc.
