I recently evaluated a girl in her late teens who has an MR/Autism diagnosis. She is very pleasant but very quiet. Family reports she is capable of use words/sentences but typically does not do so independently. She receives speech in school that per family report, focuses on using complete sentences including articles and on pictures sequencing ?? I am thinking that this girl will be graduating soon and will enter some kind of job, so how can I make my therapy with her FUNCTIONAL? Family keeps saying she has so much in her but needs it to be drawn out. Apparently AAC was trialed but they felt in limited her communication rather than increased it. My initial thoughts are to start using a remnant book to provide a basis for communation topics, as well as to develope and practice scripts. I am not familiar with working with this population so any advice would be much appreciated. Family is very motivated and is practically begging to be given homework/things to work on at home. Ideas for that also??
