I went to a STARS (Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research)training, have used it and really like it. I really like pivotal response training. The gist of it is that you are training them to realize that vocalizations will get them what they want. You get items that they really love. You tell them the name of the item and when they make any vocalization you give it to them. Then you take the item away and see if they vocalize. Of course you want to keep telling them the name of the item so that they hear it and start to pick up on the labeling. With time they will start to say the name of the object. My student was only quoting cartoons and maybe labeling pictures. He rarely requested items or food, and he was not using complete sentences to communicate. Now he is saying "I want ____ please" spontaneously
He's eye contact and attention have also improved. I can see the progress he is making and am excited to see how far we get next year. Hope this helps.
