I work at a school where this is the majority of my caseload. I would encourage you to continue with the pecs system. Use some modeling/ hand over hand to physically take their hand and give you the symbol. Use this in conjunction with a toy or object that they absouloutely love! It will be a great incentive for cooperation. Also, don't forget to positively reinforce even the smallest improvement or intentionality. These types of children take time and patientce, but it is all work it in the end. You will be able to keep building on this as the years go by. Please let me know if this works for you as it has me.
