I have 2 sons with Autism. I often find that my boys use this as a means from escaping from what they are doing. For example if we are working on academics and they find it difficult they will try to essentially change the subject hoping to escape the activity. Often it is a sign that a modification to the activity is needed for success. Same thing when talking. If they don't understand what I am talking about they will again try to gain control of the conversation and change the subject to something they want to talk about. I would redirect to the desired conversation or activity and reinforce with a reinforcer any attempt on your childs part to return to the appropriate thing. Over time increase the expectations little by little prior to reinforcing. Once successful gradually fade out the use of a reinforcer. Hope this is helpful.... Be patient because as I am sure you already know sometimes progress can take quite a long time...
