Hi newslp08. I just came across this site today. How are things going with your little one?
I've been "around the block" a time or two so it's been a long time since I was new at this; despite that, I feel new and overwhelmed by the needs of many of our autistic population when they first arrive in our school. We have "self-contained" classes only at the Pre-School level, so our classroom teachers get to experience the "what am I supposed to do now?" queasy feeling with the new kids too.
Our school is on an Air Force base overseas, with a population turnover of about 1/3 of the students every year. Back to your question...
Might I suggest you check the Articulation, Language, and Fluency section for "Nonverbal autistic students" from SLPPS? I read in that section before I came to this section, and wrote about some of my activities with a similar student. Maybe there will be some additional ideas for you in that response. Just a thought ;o)
