I have been successful with several nonverbal kids with the PECS program. I work in a special needs program for children ages birth to three. Consider how important the POWER of communication is, as opposed to just saying sounds or imitating sounds/words. PECS gives the kids power to cause something to happen! The exchange of the picture for a highly desired object forces interaction to happen. (This exchange is different than just pointing to the picture.) It has been my experience that parents, teachers... put too much emphasis on talking and not enough emphasis on communicating. Non-verbal kids need a way to communicate until talking comes. Good luck with your PECS training! I hope you find it useful.
