Hi SLP,
I too am struggling with this population. I have a child who is classified as mildly intellectually impaired and he has CP. He is very bright but because of his severe hearing impairment and dysarthric speech, he uses an augmentative communication system and a para for signing. One thing that I have tried with him is writing in complete sentences. I take index cards or sticky notes and write a word from a sentence. He is responsible for unscrambbling the sentence correctly. Another activity that I have done with my higher functioning students is to write paragraphs and progress up to essays that contain at least five paragraphs. I use a thought provoking video, book or articles from Scope Magazine as my stimulus. Let me know how things are progressing.
