I would find out motivating things for the non-verbal student. Music, books, certain toys, food?? Introduce the motivating object/activity and see how he responds. If you take it away will he indicate he wants more? You can introduce a simple voice output device (ie, big mac) and put a message to indicate more. I would start with objects and then investigate photos and symbols. Literacy activities are always good and age appropriate. Put a simple message "turn the page" on a device and model it to the students and see if they can do it when you stop reading. Good luck!
