My daughter has used the Vantage for four years and will be in fourth grade this fall. When she first used the Vantage, she only used one word answers until she knew where more words were located. We found that her "spoken" vocabulary developed at about the same rate as her reading level. It is vital to model every sentence that you say and then assist with her response. We also placed the "Icon Tutor" button in her main activity row and she now is able to look up any word that she does not know the placement of. Her paras are trained on the use of the device and how to model the sentences used. She uses the Vantage throughout her day and has made unbelievable gains. Your student will improve their use quickly with the modeling. One other idea...we will ask her to tell us what she is attempting to tell us using "all of her words". She then goes back and makes a complete sentence.
