I found that money motivates this age group. I went to www.moneyinstructor.com and printed off some of the play money-it looks real, but is smaller and of course not real. I opened a "speech store" and asked each of my groups what things we should put in the store. It was easy. The dolloar store was a big help and Wal-Mart has things like CD players for 10.00. I bought a clear/plastic shoe rack from Target to label the kids names on, so they could keep the money in their own shoe pocket. I hung it up on the wall in my room. If you don't have a permanent room then I suggest keeping it in a file cabinet or draw for saftey.
They could even buy things like free time on the computer or being first in line. You have to decide what they get money for; 1.00 for good behavior, homework, etc.
I found this to motivate all my speech/lang students in middle school. They help in the creation of the store and it's rules. They also learn about saving money and spending it. I had one student who wouldn't even participate and when I indtroduced this idea he moved his chair back into the group and started doing his work.
Hope this idea helps
