I use PECS with my non-verbal and even some of my verbal autistic children. Attend a conference on its use or get the manuel. The child's verbalizingis built into the system. Many times, the person continues to need PECS even after they are verbal in times of stress or when learning new information. PECS is not a form of communication that needs to be phased out. It is a powerful way for the person to communicate. The visual cue that it provides for the student is invaluable. Please feel free to contact me regarding PECS at largink@franklin.k12.wi.us Hope this helps you get started.
