Hey,
It's hard... I found that my students really get into competition. So I used, that points game- I found it on here, and they love it. Where you have word problems (reinforcing math vocabulary) and the answer is the number of points they win. I usually let them pick a "points card" before each turn during an activity. They keep track of all their points for a month on an index card and whoever has the most at the end of the month gets to pick a prize (this is the hardest part as middle schoolers tend to be quite picky). They all love the points thing, and I'll award points, for attendance, behavior, homework completion, etc.
