i just recently got a refresher course on pecs. the phases are really important to follow to experience the most success. the manual has wonderful tips as well.
phase II: is increasing initiation so that the child has to start seeking you out as you increase the distance between you and the child and the book.
phase III: is training picture discrimination once you start pairing preferred pics vs. non-preferred
phase IV: is expanding to phrase/sentence request/response
and i'm forgetting phase V, but you get the idea. i also find it helpful to watch the video that comes with the manual. hope that helps.
