I would just do "informal observation and assessment" of his skills based on what you observe him doing at school and get parent info on what he's doing at home and go from there. I think standardized scores are sometimes completely inappropriate for these kiddos that can't verbally communicate yet because year to year the scores may not show any growth (scores remain in the 1st percentile or Standard Score of 50) when there has actually been growth that isn't easily "quantified" by these upper-level language tests.

You could use the checklist portion of the PLS-4 to assess his non-verbal communication. I have also found that some lower level and developmental tests (some given by psychologists) that look at overall development give some good information on early communication skills, i.e. Western Psychological Services (WPS), Learning Accomplishment Profile (LAP, Early LAP), etc.
