nonverbal teenagers - need ideas!

I'm a graduate student that has begun working with 2 nonverbal teenage boys (separately). I use some communication boards, picture cards, etc. - but I'm having some trouble coming up with ideas that are motivating AND functional at the same time! Any ideas?
