Hi Laurel,
I think what you are doing is mostly correct, my suggestion would be to make the sessions more about praise rather than correction (similar to the Lidcombe program) to build his confidence up and make the sessions more enjoyable for both of you. Perhaps you could use those magnetic chips to praise when he is really smooth rather than when is is dysfluent. This will still help him self monitor as he knows when he doesnt get a chip he must have stuttered. When he does stutter, get hims to say it again using one of the strategies e.g. can you say that again with a long start
I would also suggest that you work on fluency at a conversation level he is good at so that he feels more success and then step up slightly each time e.g. pratcise speaking in single sentences (does your person have red hair?) - then 2 sentences- a few connected sentences- paragraphs- 30 second monologue- 1 minute monologue- 2 min monologue- 1 min conversation and so on
