I have been working on this with a 2nd grade student of mine for months. He is finally getting it and working at phrase and sentence levels. I taught him to produce two sounds: long "a" and short "o" We would say a +o and it sounds more like "ay yah" I used many visuals to help him understand tongue positioning for the two sounds, such as Mighty mouth or hand cues. It took some time but we are getting there. Hope this helps!
