Check for tongue thrust. Hold sip of water in mouth. Have child spread lips apart and try to swallow. If tongue thrust swallow is present, the water will come out of teeth or the lips will have to close to enable the swallow. The child might throw head back to swallow as well. Not correctable in school therapy. Orthos can put in tongue thrust appliance IF they believe in the condition. Many do not! They would rather break jaws and put on braces. Beware! My daughter has an appliance and it's working well. Fix the tongue thrust before braces otherwise the teeth will move again. Resolve any finger sucking habits as well.
