I start with really simple, concrete fill-in sentences like "A lemon is yellow, an apple is _____." Or "The ceiling is up, the floow is _____." I usually write them on the white board and then we talk about the relationship in the first half of the analogy, and how they need to use the same relationahip to figure out how to fill in the blank. I don't use the wording "Lemon is to yellow as apple is to _____," until they've had some real good success with the easier format.
