How about working on them in reverse....give them a complete analogy and break it down based on type of analogy (ie. category) and relationship. For example, Hot is to summer as cold is to winter. First determine that it is based on an opposite relationship. Talk about the opposite pairs. Second, determine that the answer must be from the season category. Picture analogies are good too; it takes away the written word and reduces the need to visualize or conceptualize the words.
Start simple, concrete and work your way to more abstract. Write them out and break them apart. Do quite a few before you revert back to filling in the blank.
