I just screened a 2nd grader for articulation. The teacher was having difficulty understanding him. In looking at his bite, I found that he has an open bite and that his tongue protrudes for many sounds, /s/, /ch/, /sh/ and /j/. When talking, he exhibits limited labial movement, but exhibited more movement during an oral motor exam. I know that he is going to need to round his lips more for the affricates and /sh/ sounds. He also substitutes /w/ for /r/. I am thinking that I should refer him to his dentist because of his bite, but do you think I should qualify him for now to start working on his /r/ and to see if I can get a better production of his other sounds by working on pulling his tongue back and rounding his lips? Thanks for your help!
