Have you made up a PECS system? This is where you have pictures set out for choices and they communicate by handing a picture to the person they are communicating with. Snack time is a great activity or play time where they get to request games. I take pictures of some of the games in classroom and use them for choosing. This is one of your basic levels of communication for severely impaired students. An assistive technology specialist should be consulted to determine most appropriate form of communication. Our district uses Intermediate unit speech therapists ( assistive technology therapists) to assess and make recommendations.
