I have an early intervention client - 1 year three months old to be exact, who tested age appropriate for speech/language development. However, his family's dentist told his mother that a shortened upper frenulum (which he has, apparently) could contribute to speech delay, so now she's paranoid about this and looking to me for advice. Is there any research or any way to explain to her that a shortened upper frenulum shouldn't cause problems with speech delay (which he does not have, anyway) and that, even if it did, there's nothing to be done until it is cut?
